The central mass of the warp core consists of the upper and lower magnetic constriction segments. These serve to structurally support the matter/antimatter reaction chamber, provide a pressure vessel to maintain the proper core operating environment, and align the incoming matter/antimatter streams for combining with the matter/antimatter reaction chamber. The outermost transparent layer serves as an observable guage of engine performance as harmless secondary photons are emitted from the inner layers, producing a visible blue glow.
